Instructions
Choose a spot where you don’t mind water spills and set your container filled with water down along with all the objects you’ve gathered
Begin by explaining the simple concept of sinking and floating to your toddler. Let them know that some things will stay on top of the water (float), while others will go down (sink).
Have your toddler pick items one by one and ask them to predict whether it will sink or float.
Then have them place the item in the water and observe what happens. Did it sink to the bottom or float on the surface? This hands-on experience allows your child to witness the concept in action.
After testing several items, help your child group them into two categories: things that sank and things that floated. This activity promotes critical thinking and classification skills.
Fun Tip!
If you have a small net or scoop, have your toddler rescue the items from the water.
What will they learn?
Science Exploration: Introduces the concept of buoyancy and helps toddlers understand why some objects float while others sink.
Critical Thinking: Encourages children to make predictions and observe the outcomes, stimulating their critical thinking skills.
Sensory Experience: The tactile sensation of handling different items and the splashing water provides a delightful sensory experience for toddlers.
After we’re all done with the guessing game, my little ones usually spend the rest of the time splashing and imaginary play with the water and all the items we had gathered. If you liked this activity, try out many more just like it in the app!
